Weyers Cave, Va. (WHSV) With a winter weather advisory in effect for the entire viewing area, there's no telling how many flights will be canceled at the Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport (SHD) and other airports.
With only a few days left to Thanksgiving, people are traveling from all over.
"Definitely going to spend some time with my family, I haven't seen them it's been a few months now," said Gregory Hempt, who is a junior at the Virginia Military Institute.
Hempt is on his way to Pennsylvania. He got on a last minute flight to avoid possible delays on Tuesday. His school dismissed early in light of the expected wintry mix .
"I called my mom and told her that you know they're letting us out early. So I decided to call and see if I could get a flight. Luckily I was able to get one and get a taxi here," said Hempt.
The only commercial flights leaving SHD this holiday season will be with United Airlines.
SHD is recommending to customers that they keep up with the status of their flight on United.com.
The airport said it is prepared for anything tomorrow.
"By getting all our snow removal and deicing equipment checked ready to go, make sure everything is serviced, ready for tomorrow morning should we need it," said Greg Campbell who is the Executive Director with SHD.
Campbell said nearly all the flights leaving SHD are full for the next few days.
"That started last Friday and that's pretty much going to be the case, with the exception of Thanksgiving day through the weekend," said Campbell.
Holiday travel through SHD is a little busier, considering traffic at the airport is up by 15 percent since last year. If flights are canceled tomorrow due to the weather, SHD said it will try to accommodate the passengers at a different time once the weather improves.
