The government may soon not be working, but diseases don't stop just because the hill does. With the government shutdown likely, the poultry industry questions it's ability to bring food safely to consumers.
The USDA's inspection employees are among those government employees considered essential. They will not be furloughed, and will continue to work through any government shutdown. This will allow safe, inspected poultry to make it's way from the farm to the consumer. But not all USDA employees are so safe.
Tony Corbo, Legislative Representative for Food & Water Watch, said, "There are approximately 10 thousand employees in that agency, but 87 hundred of them are considered to be essential employees, so there are going to be about 13 hundred employees for that agency who are going to be furloughed."
While employees may be furloughed, there will likely be very little impact on local poultry.
