With ice in the forecast for Tuesday morning, local mechanics are warning you to give yourself extra time to prepare your car before hitting the road.

They say one of the most important things is to let your car completely defrost and warm up.

Making sure all of the windows are completely clear is important for safety, but also important to keep protect your wiper blades.

Mechanics say there's something you can do before you go to bed that will make a big difference in the morning.

"A common practice is to lay like a floor mat or a rug or something over your windshield tonight so that in the morning when you get out you just rip that off and you're already deiced. That's a really good practice to do and it prevents a lot of problems," says Todd Jenkins from Jenkins Automotive.

Jenkins adds they often see cars that have damaged wheels, tires and front ends from sliding into curbs from slippery road conditions.

He says it's important to test the road, so you can be sure what kind of traction and control you have.
