Project Hopeful Brings Clean Water to Bona

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV)-- "It made me feel sad, it's so little to us, but so big to them," said Karman Lloyd.

Karman Lloyd is a member of the church in downtown Staunton and just returned from a trip to Ethiopia that she'll never forget. It's part of a program the church is sponsoring called "Project Hopeful." The organization builds fresh water wells in African villages where the people don't have instant access to fresh water.

They visited Bona, Ethiopia to oversee construction of another well which is expected to be completed in August. While there, Lloyd remembers the desperate actions of people, just to get a drink of water.
Members of a church in Staunton have gone to Africa to help build a well for the town abroad.

"There were people at the Bona site that were literally scooping water out with a spoon just to get anything and they would bathe in that water, drink in that water, they use that water for everything." said Lloyd.

They also visited another newly completed well in Ethiopia that they helped build.

"That one is going to help hundreds, there's hundreds of people in the community and children so it's far reaching," said Charissa Knight.

Charissa Knight is a member of church Downtown and said their work in the area has a domino effect on the people there.

"He said our children are healthier, not getting sick as much, we have more money because we're not having to take our children to the doctor because they're sick so much," said Knight.

Knight and Lloyd said that members of the church downtown will return to help other villages in Africa because she thinks we all have a duty to help others in need.

"I feel that it's our responsibility to help each other, no matter if that's your neighbor, right across from you on your own street or the village in Africa," said Knight.
