HARRISONBURG, Va.-- A non-profit wants to prevent pit bulls from being put down at shelters.

The Shenandoah Valley Spay and Neuter clinic is offering a promotion to get pit bulls and pit bull mixes fixed in August.

During " Primp your Pit," you will pay $20 to sterilize your pit before Aug. 31.

Community Outreach Manager Dan Chavez said it usually costs $75 for dogs less than 50 pounds and $25 extra if the dog is more than 50 pounds.

He said there is a high intake of pits at shelters in the valley.

"If we can be able to prevent a larger increase of animals entering our shelters. It's going to start because of spay neuter. It's going to start because we are preventing unwanted litters. Unwanted litters are the number one reason why we are receiving so many animals in our shelters these days," said Chavez.

The clinic hopes to sterilize 200 pit bulls in the area.

"They are the number one breed that are being put down in shelters here locally and nationally in our shelters. So we want to make sure we are focusing on this as much as we can," said Chavez.
