Protecting Yourself From Mail Theft

WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) -- There have been cases of mail theft going on throughout the country, including Virginia.

It's the holiday season when a large number of thefts are reported.

Sgt. Brian Edwards with the Waynesboro Police Department said that mail theft isn't much of a problem in their area, but it does occur.

For those traveling for the holidays, contact the Postal Service to have them hold your mail.

Also, if you are expecting a package, try to arrange to be home when it arrives.

Sometimes people follow postal workers in order to steal packages.

"If they see someone walking up and down the street opening up mail boxes, that's a good indication that that person is up to steal something. There really is no reason, except for the homeowner or the postal carrier to be in a person's mailbox," said Edwards.

Members of the Harrisonburg and Staunton police departments said mail theft isn't too much of a problem in their areas either.
