HARRISONBURG -- A judge sentenced Charceil Kellam in 2006 for having crack cocaine and conspiring to sell it. Court documents reveal she had more than 100 grams of cocaine. Those documents also reveal that Kellam was already convicted of several other drug charges.
Protesters gathered at the U.S. district court to protest her life sentence. They said her race affected the sentencing and Vonceil Hill, Kellam's mother, said a lower sentencing would help her family.
“It would be a relief. I'm 71, I'll be 71 in March, and raising her kids. It's kind of hard. She could get back to raising her own children,” said Hill.
Protesters hope her sentence will be changed. They filed papers to try and vacate her case in federal court.
