STAUNTON, Va -- His name is Erik Sabiston. He grew up in Staunton and graduated from R.E. Lee High School. His mother, Lynne Stogdale, now lives in Florida, but a WHSV reporter spoke with her on the phone on Thursday.
Sabiston is featured right in the middle of the Newsweek cover in his uniform. The article inside goes into detail of what Sabiston and his men had to do to save many people's lives during war.
Sabiston was the pilot in the helicopter that survived this difficult mission. His mother said she is so proud of her son and that he truly is a hero now for the whole world to see.
"And I'm so thankful for all of our military who have gone to war, and fortunately Erik came back and after my reading of this article, I am just shocked at what he had done. I'm glad I didn't know it beforehand," said Stogdale.
Stogdale said she just spoke to her son and that he plans to meet with Steven Spielberg Thursday night in Washington, D.C. to talk about making his story into a movie.
