HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Gift cards are the perfect present when what to buy has you stumped; however, if you aren't careful, a gift card can quickly turn into a lump of coal.
If you don't use a bank gift card within a year, you could be charged for procrastinating.
One gift card from MasterCard, for example, charges a $2 monthly fee, after 12 consecutive months of inactivity.
Courtney Tennant has used bank gift cards before, but said she never paid close attention to the fine print.
"I think that it's something that should be more visible that way certain people, that is something they would know right off hand rather than just getting it and expecting there is not going to be a fee," said Tennant.
Not all cards will charge you if you don't use it and but it is legal to charge a fee.
The Federal Trade Commission states it is part of gift card rules in place since 2010.
