Timothy Williams declared winner in Waynesboro city council recount.

Elections may have been last week but one race is still undecided in Waynesboro.

Judges will take a second look to determine who wins the city council seat for Ward A in Waynesboro.

Incumbent Timothy Williams beat his challenger, Jim Serba, by only 22 votes.

According to the law, if the number of votes are less than a .5 margin, the candidate has a right to a recount.

Serba said he figured he had nothing to lose.

A recount involves judges counting all of the ballots again and while this is not common for Waynesboro, the city is prepared for the process.

“It's not a regular thing, and it does happen,” said Lisa Wooten with the Waynesboro Registrar Office. “It can happen in any election. I've been through several, so it's not new information for me, or anything new to deal with.”

Serba said he will be satisfied even if the recount does not end up in his favor.

“Hopefully when this is all over, even if it doesn't go my way, I'll be able to get on a couple committees and still be involved with those projects. That's what I hope for,” said Serba.

Serba said he doesn't expect the results to change but he still wants to serve his city.

Three judges will recount all of the ballots on May 24 and the Registrar said the closest race she has ever seen has been between three votes.
