HARRISONBURG, Va.---Neighbors in our area joined the fight against cancer by participating in the Harrisonburg Rockingham Relay for Life this weekend.
Event co-chair Kelsey Bourgoyne said this is the biggest crowd she has ever seen with nearly 1,500 people.
She said 103 teams participated this year. In 2012, there were only 100 teams.
According to Bourgoyne this is a record for the overnight fundraiser.
She also said the teams set a record for money raised before the event with $316,000. By the end of the event, groups turned in $365,000.
The money raised will go to the American Cancer Society to fund research and missions for survivors.
"The support from our community in the last year has just grown and it's exciting to see new businesses sponsors, new teams and new people coming to the event that have never been to a relay before," said Bourgoyne .
She said the fundraising goal this year is $416,000. This number is lower than last year when groups raised $430,000.
The fundraiser will wrap up by August 31.
