A new report lists Harrisonburg as one of the safest cities in the country.

CQ Press compared the rate of six specific crimes to the national crime rate to compile the list.

They included murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft.

Harrisonburg ranked number 9 out of 358.

Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce president Frank Tamberrino said the sense of community helps combat crime.

"[This is] an area that people look after each other more than anything else. Even if you are in a neighborhood where you don't really know your neighbors, you still keep an eye for what goes on. You can't always find that in the large metropolitan areas," he said.

Tamberrino said the great educational system and economic growth also help deter crime.
