ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- A retired Marine is hiking from Virginia Military Institute in Lexington all the way to New Market. Mike Raish said it's a chance for him to relive military history. Raish walked where VMI cadets marched, in the pouring rain, to the Battle of New Market during the Civil War.
According to VMI, the cadets marched more than 80 miles.
"I've proven that an old guy with lots and lots of advantages over what they had can do what they did physically at least. I'm not worried about being shot, I've got better shoes, I've got better weather, I've got better food," said Raish.
Raish started his hike at VMI on Friday. He grew up in Dayton and came back to Virginia to do the memorial hike. Raish said although he does have more resources, it's a chance to challenge himself physically.
The hike happened to fall on Memorial Day Weekend, a time for remembrance.
"Honoring the dead and trying to help those that are left behind to continue to enjoy the benefits this country offers," said Raish.
Raish has family along for support. He has about nine miles to go and will finish his trek to New Market on Memorial Day.
