ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV)-- There was no shortage of singing and dancing at the fairgrounds already this weekend. On Aug.10, hundreds of people came out for a gospel concert and horse show that were held as one of the first few fair events.
But, many people think of not only the entertainment, but also food, when they think of the fair.
"People come back for every year; the funnel cakes, the chicken shack, the typical fair foods, the deep-fried Twinkies. We've got a new item on the menu this year, we've got bacon-wrapped, deep-fried cinnamon rolls," said Jeff Ishee, a general manager at the Rockingham County Fair.
A couple of seasoned fairgoers had a very precise idea of what the best rides are.
"Scrambler's the thing that goes really fast; to the side, and it goes ---woosh----back and forth," said Autumn Hall, a fairgoer.
Since the Rockingham County Fair is one of the largest fairs in Virginia, it takes a lot of effort to prepare.
"It's already been a busy couple of weeks, and thank goodness for all the volunteers. They come out and help out with all the preparations.
It's like becoming one of Virginia's largest cities for a week," said Ishee.
Beyond musical concerts, the rides, and demolition derbies, there are also new additions to the fairgrounds. There are new rides, a new poultry industry exhibit, and more fun than ever before.
Aug. 11 is dollar day until 5 p.m. and the rides, which are open from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. are a dollar a piece.
