Rockingham County Schools Update and Maintain Cell Phone Policy

The Rockingham County School Board reviewed its cell phone policy Monday night, and board members agreed to continue to allow students to use them in the classroom.

Supervisor for technology Kevin Perkins showed board members feedback on the policy.

The schools allowed cell phones in schools back in May.

Perkins says there's mostly been positive feedback from both teachers and students.

He says of course they can be distraction at times, but says for the most part, smartphones and tablets have been an added benefit to the classroom.

"Teachers felt that students were being responsible with personal devices at school, and they felt that they were able to do some new things instructionally that maybe they hadn't been able to do before. Parents like to be able to communicate with their children during the day at certain times," said Perkins.

He says they'll continue to update the policy to make sure students and teachers are using them safely and appropriately. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
