Homicide Investigation Continues as Community Mourns Loss

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office is asking for help in finding the suspect involved in this case. The owner of the Dry River store where the shooting happened is being treated at UVA Medical Center.

Workers there are not able to release Jae Young Kim's condition.

Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson said their top priority is to bring the suspect in after they finished their on scene investigation Sunday.

Now, Sheriff Hutcheson says tips are coming in and they're working around the clock to follow up.

"It's a community, it's people know each other, people are friendly to one another and then you just have a cold hearted, cruel and vicious act like this that's committed," said Sheriff Hutcheson.

Members of the community, who know the Kim family, write words of support. People who came to the store frequently say the couple knew everyone by name and knew orders by heart.

"Real nice people, they loved everybody," said Danny Burrell, who is a regular customer.

"Just really close to me, I loved them like my own parents," said Dylan Thompson.

Sheriff Hutchinson says a lot of people have been calling in tips after the Sheriff's Office released the photo of the suspect.

"If you hear something more than once, that's a good sign," said Sheriff Hutcheson.

Deputies are trying to piece together evidence to find the suspect.

"Whatever level, was it a combination of maybe on foot for a while and then reaching the vehicle parked some distance away, so that's also a possibility," said Sheriff Hutcheson.

The Sheriff's Office and State Police finished the investigation at the store at 4 a.m on Sunday. Now, deputies are waiting on an official cause of death for Jae Kim's wife, Eun Kim.

As friends gather to remember, they also hope for justice.

"People like this that serve the community don't need to be done like this, I mean justice needs to be served," said Burrell.

"Let's find this callous individual that committed this crime, we want to bring this suspect to justice, and we need as much help anybody who might have that information, again to help us to do this," said Sheriff Hutcheson.

The Sheriff's Office plans to release more surveillance pictures. They are following up on some tips. Evidence collected at the convenience store will be mailed off to a lab.

If you have any tips for the Sheriff's Office, call the Crime Solvers hotline at (540) 574-5050 or the Sheriff's Office at (540) 564-3800.

There is a $5,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the suspect.
