FISHERSVILLE, Va -- More than 14,000 cars were parked at the Augusta County Expo on Thursday night for Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney's visit.
The sheriff from Augusta County said they have a license plate reader they used to count cars. Thursday night, that reader recorded about 14,000 cars. That number does not take into consideration people who parked elsewhere and walked in, so the actual number of cars at the even could be even higher than that.
The sheriff said the Expo was not large enough to handle crowds of that size and that was why some people did not make it inside of the gates.
“They got hung up in traffic. They couldn't get there. We feel for them, but when you take almost 14,000 cars and dump them in on a little two lane road, it was a nightmare,” said Augusta County Sheriff Randy Fisher.
The crowd last night was one of largest crowds the sheriff of Augusta County said they have handled. He said they had about 60 people on hand to help with parking.
