The State Board of Elections requested an investigation into voter registration fraud. News 3 is learning more about the man at the center of that investigation, from his roommate.
"Calm, cool and collected." is how Sky Coon describes his roommate, Colin Small. Small is at the center of a voter registration controversy. Coon says it's been great living under the same roof with small.
"He's been reliable, he's lived up to all his committments." said Coon. Coon says back in August, Colin Small answered his roommate ad on Craigslist. He tells News 3 Colin told him he would be working for the Romney campaign. About two months later, Colin was arrested, accused of throwing away filled out voter registration forms.
"It's a big accusation, it's a swing state, virginia, and i thought, this is going to draw a lot of attention." said Coon.
That attention, now coming from the state level. The State Board of Elections unanimously voting to put a formal request to Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, asking him to launch an investigation. This requests comes days after Virginia Democratic Chairman Brian Moran called for a probe.
"I take this very seriously. I know that my colleagues do too. I believe it was an isoated incident, but we need to make sure." said Charlie Judd, State Elections Board Chairman.
"there was one incident where he was actually caught on the spot, discarding those applications. I cannot with confidence say that's the only time that happened." said Kimberly Bowers, Vice-Chairman of the State Elections Board.
Coon says he's been keeping up with this story, reading online articles and blogs.
He's even read one that claims Colin Small panicked by throwing away the registration forms.
"Even that assumes guilt. So i would say, in the midst of all this, say hey, innocent until proven guilty." said Coon.
Colin Small will get his chance in court.
He's received a subpoenaed to meet with the Commonwealth's Attorney in Staunton, next Wednesday.
Small will be in court in Rockingham County on November 5.
