A new scam to warn you about tonight - this time a scam letter addressed to business owners. The warning comes from the State Corporation Commission.
According to the SCC, the letter is from the so-called "Corporate Records Service." The SCC says there is no record of the company. The letter offers to prepare a company's annual minutes - for a fee of $125. The SCC says it does not require or recognize the form included in the letter.
An attorney here in the valley calls the letter "misleading."
"Read the small print to see what's really being requested of them," said Boyce Brannock, an attorney in Staunton. "Make sure they know enough about their business so that they can identify this as being an unnecessary solicitation."
Brannock said preparing a company's minutes is a legitimate practice...but it should not cost that much.
