Staunton, VA -- Around 10a.m. this morning at Shelburne Middle School someone alerted the School Resource Officer (SRO) that a student had a weapon in a locker.

The weapon turned out to be an un-loaded pellet gun. The SRO along with a school administrator quickly located the gun and the situation was under control in a matter of minutes.

Lisa Klein with the Staunton Police Department explained, "It was about 15 minutes from beginning to end, of course the officers were there afterwards. There was the initial school resource officer and then other officers responded immediately. But what they didn't do was lock down the school, they didn't do a RAID scenario which is a Rapid And Immediate Deployment."

She also explained, "A RAID is for situations that can include but not limited to, an active shooter, or an individual using some other type of weapon which could harm or jeopardize the safety of students or other citizens."
