STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV)-- A simple yard sale can help so many, especially when it leads to donations for people in need in the Valley.
"So many people are in need, we usually don't participate in yard sales but this one is kind of a win-win," said Sarah Williams, the seller at a local yard sale.
Williams lives in Staunton and has a lot of stuff she doesn't use.
"You know, we have a lot that I think other people could love also, so it's time to help others out," said Williams.
On July 5, she took advantage of the warm, sunny day and did just that, by participating in a yard sale put on by the Salvation Army.
"the vendors here make a 15 dollar donation to set up their items on one of the tables here and all that money goes toward a good cause," said Williams.
Money donated by the vendors goes toward the Salvation Army's effort to provide cooling and other assistance to people in Staunton during the hot summer days.
"When I did June stats, we helped 129 people with electric bills, food, and vouchers from our clothing stores," said yard sale organizer Tamar Grier.
Grier works with the Salvation Army and said they are in constant need of donations during summer for electric and cooling assistance.
Especially for people with with medical problems.
"If you have congestive heart failure and stuff like that, people with that have to stay in and have to have air so they have to have it," said Grier.
Williams said it's important we help others in the community.
"It's a wonderful feeling, kind of a pay it forward sort of thing," said Williams.
Because you never know when the tables might flip.
"I would hope that if we needed help, we could get help from the community, and that we could help those in the community that need help from us."
That's one lesson she hopes everyone learns.
