The Salvation Army in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County is asking for two hours of your time to ring bells.

Captain Duane Burleigh said all their bell ringers are volunteers and this year they need more people to sign up for shifts.

Roy Good is ringing bells twice a week during the holiday season.

Good said he's the one who appreciates some extra change or dollar bills.

"We are here as a constant reminder to people that there are needs and this an opportunity to helpful."

Burleigh said the biggest need this year are volunteers like Good.

"We are in need. We are desperate. We filled all the hours so far. We still have more hours to fill starting black Friday," Good said.

He said they have filled 300 out of 400 shifts so far.

"Maybe is the economy, maybe is the weather. People haven't really started to think about Christmas yet," Burleigh said.

Burleigh said the kettle campaign is their biggest fundraiser.

"Maybe things are tight this year and you can't give the money this year. Your time is very valuable to us and we really appreciate that," Burleigh said.

He said compared to other communities, in Harrisonburg and Rockingham county bell ringers are not paid, but are all volunteers.

For Good, it's not a chore.

"You are missing a real opportunity, a real blessing to be of service, to help out where service is very much needed," Good said.

Burleigh said this campaign helps those in need during the holidays but also year-round.

So the more fundraising they do, the more they can help.
