As the mercury drops, the Waynesboro Salvation Army is trying to keep up with the demand for energy assistance.

Lieutenant John Blevins said electric companies in the area usually gives grants to help.

The Salvation Army helps as many as 60 people with their electric bills every month.

According to Blevins, in December, the organization gave out about $1,200.

This month, 35 people have asked for assistance. He said many of them have showed up in the last couple days.

"It was hard to anticipate that we were gonna have a cold winter and all of the sudden a cold snap and so the funding comes in through cycles and if the need hits in part of the cycle where we don't have as much, then definitely. We can be in the position where we can't help everybody," Blevins said.

Blevins said this season, the agency has received more requests for housing. He said that sometimes when people can't pay their bills, they can be evicted.
