STUARTS DRAFT, Va. (WHSV) -- Stuarts Draft High School's Sam Davis loves that in wrestling, all of the pressure to win is on himself.
"If I mess up, its on me. If I win, then its on me. I like being able to say that I defeated him. There's no one else. Its just me and him out there on the mat," said Sam. "Preparation is everything. Wrestling's a lifestyle. It really starts in the wrestling room with how hard you go, the pace and everything. Conditioning; you want to be in the best shape of your life."
Going hard all the time is how Sam is a three-time state champion and captain of his wrestling team.
"His work ethic is unparalleled; unmatched. I've been coaching for several years and I've never met anyone, never had an athlete with that intense work ethic," said Abe Mikell, Sam's coach.
The classroom is no different for Sam as he takes that intensity and applies it to his schoolwork.
Next year, he's attending the United States Naval Academy and he's ready for the challenge, both on the mat and in the books.
"Academics-wise, I'm going to take the same way as athletics, head on and work as hard as possible. Its definitely going to be a lot harder than Stuarts Draft academics but I think I'll be ready," said Sam.
"He has a work ethic like no one I've ever seen. Its not just on the wrestling mat. Its not just on a football field. You see it in the classroom," said Martha Mikell, one of Sam's teachers.
