Harrisonburg School Board voted Tuesday night to go with Crabtree Rohr-baugh & Associated as its architectural firm to build the new middle school. Cost was not talked about.
Doctor Scott Kizner said the goal is to have the new school built by 2016.
They would transition Thomas Harrison Middle School into an elementary school.
The new middle school would be built near Harrisonburg High School, so the schools could share some classrooms.
Dr. Kizner said the need for a new school is because of increased enrollment.
There are more than 5,100 students, not including pre-school students, which is a three percent increase compared to last year.
Dr. Kizner wouldn't reveal construction costs yet, but he did say it will hinge on the economy.
"In the last 12 to 18 months the cost of construction has also increased, so we'll get a better grasp of the numbers over the next few months," said Dr. Kizner.
They also plan to renovate Thomas Harrison Middle School.
Depending on cost, that renovation could be done in phases.
