ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. -- It's back to school for students in Rockingham County, but students won't see any immediate changes made during the break, especially when it comes to their safety after the shootings in Newtown, Ct.
School board members said any changes to school safety would come after the board's first meeting this year, which is scheduled for mid-January. The district plans to form a committee to complete a safety evaluation.
One parent said he wants to see more done to protect the students.
“I walk in and out of school when I pick them up, and nobody even notices me. It was good until what happened in Connecticut,” said Alfredo Torres, a parent.
School board members say the district may create a new position that only focuses on students safety.
