STAUNTON, Va -- More than half of third, fourth and fifth graders at Bessie Weller failed to pass the math Standards of Learning exam. Bessie Weller's warning means that scores need to rise in the next three years or else it risks losing accreditation.
Improvement plans are going to need to be put in place because the state will be conducting routine performance reviews.
New components to the math test could be the reason for the low scores. Harder, multi-step problems replaced multiple choice questions. School leaders said that scores across the state are lower than they ever have been.
Stephanie Haskins, Staunton's director of assessment,said that when the history portion of the test was changed, they saw a dip in scores, but were able to bounce back. She expects a similar thing will happen with the math test.
“We want improvement in every school, no matter where we're performing,” said Haskins. “So, we feel very confident that we have a very strong staff, and we have a very strong group that's really, really dedicated to the success of all of our students.”
In order for a school to receive the accreditation, at least 70-percent of the students who take the test need to pass.
