ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office is still searching for the person who stabbed 52-year-old Robert Atkinson on Coopers Mountain Road on Saturday night.
Deputies said at about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, Atkinson was stabbed multiple times to the torso. He is recovering at home now after being flown to U. Va. Medical Center in serious condition.
With the recent 33 Express drug bust nearby and the Dry River Store shooting in February, some people in the community said they're wondering if they need to get a gun.
As far as safety goes, some said they need to protect themselves, while some people at the Dry River Store, just down the road, say it's just a lot happening at once.
"No I feel safe in this community. It just seems like it was a lot of unfortunate events. But I mean, where I live, I live across 33, I have no trouble," said Justin Arey, who lives in in the area, "Still a small community, I mean it's all neighbors and friends. Everybody goes to church together, works together, knows everybody."
Deputies came back to the area Monday to follow up on leads and there are still no charges at this time as the investigation continues.
