CHARLOTTESVILLE -- Secretary of State John Kerry made his first major public address Wednesday at the University of Virginia.

The new secretary of state wanted to focus on the president's foreign policy and made the case of why the United States aids other countries.

Kerry talked neighbors at Old Cabell Hall Wednesday and addressed many things, but he mainly stressed the United States foreign policy.

Kerry said having aid for foreign countries puts more Americans to work. He believes the more businesses sell overseas, the more they can build at home. Kerry said the money for the aid is about a penny on every tax dollar.

He knows the United States can't help others if it doesn't have a strong home.

"I know some of you and many across the country wish globalization would just go away, or you wistfully remember easier times,” said Kerry, “My friends, no politician, no matter how powerful, can put this genie back in the bottle. So our challenge is to tame the worst impulses of globalization even as we harness its ability to spread information and possibility."
