Senior Safety Awareness Month

WAYNESBORO,Va. (WHSV)-- It's National Safety Month and people here in the Valley are trying to raise awareness about the safety of senior citizens. One of those big risks seniors need to be aware of, is falling.

Valley Program-Aging Services, or V.P.A.S., has partnered with the Waynesboro Fire Department to offer programs to senior citizens to help reduce the risks of falling.

The programs are called "sail" and "remembering when. Both involve educating seniors on how to reduce the risks of falling.

Someone who works with V.P.A.S. knows firsthand how important it is to teach fall prevention to seniors.

"My parents having fallen and injured themselves in the past few months, so it really does bring it home that this could happen to anybody and everybody so the more education you do to keep them safe, the better," said Janice Gentry, of V.P.A.S.

They were able to fund one of the programs because of a grant they received from the government.
