Two Dead in Accident on Route 11 in Weyers Cave

WEYERS CAVE (WHSV)-- Two people are dead after an accident on Route 11 near Blue Ridge Community College on Monday morning.

Virginia State Police were called to the crash on Lee Highway near College Lane at 7:59 a.m.

A 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was traveling southbound on Highway 11 when it pulled into the center turn lane. A vehicle ahead was stopped in the turn lane and, according to witnesses, the pickup truck swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid the stopped vehicle. When the Silverado swerved to the left it went into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a northbound 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier, according to police.

Both the driver of the Silverado, Geraldine K. Sprouse, 65, of Craigsville, Va. and the driver of the Cavalier, Nicholas R. Broce, 33, of Fort Defiance, Va., died at the scene. According to the Virginia State Police, neither was wearing a seat belt and neither alcohol or speed appear to be factors.

By 10: 30 a.m. the accident had been cleared and the road was reopened.
