Comparing Cases of Lung Cancer
HARRISONBURG, Va. As of July 2012, the Shenandoah Valley region has some of the lowest percentages of smokers in Virginia, according to the Virginia Department of Health.
In our area; however, lung cancer numbers have been increasing over the years.
Jim Hughes, a smoker who has traveled throughout Virginia during his time in the military, said these numbers are a real shock.
"I have friends in Northern Virginia. I go down to Lynchburg, my daughters in Lynchburg, I associate with people there. We go down to Norfolk, we have some friends down there so we travel all over Virginia and go up to Winchester. It's the same. To me, the percentage of smokers is the same," said Hughes.
Dusty Donaldson, the founder of the Dusty Joy Foundation, a lung cancer advocacy group, said of the quarter of a million Americans who will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year, more than 30,000 never put a cigarette to their lips.
She said this data shows that anyone can get lung cancer.
