LURAY, Va. (AP) -- Shenandoah National Park will open the Harry F. Boyd Sr. Visitor Center during the winter for the first time.

Beginning Jan. 11, the visitor center will be open on winter weekends from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather permitting.

The park's interpretive supervisor, Deborah Smith, tells The News Leader that the visitor center typically closes shortly after Thanksgiving and reopens in the spring.

Smith says park officials are looking forward to providing more options for winter weekend visitors.

Park rangers will be available to answer questions. The bookstore will be open and exhibits and movies will be available to the public.

A $10-per-vehicle entrance fee to the park is good for seven days from December to February. The fee increases to $15-per-vehicle on March 1.
