HARRISONBURG -- The event hosted at Funky's Skate Center helped a family raise money to offset the cost of a kidney transplant.

Don smith is one of several people on a list waiting for a kidney match.

Cheerful people and games is mainly what Donald Smith wants out of this day.

There's something present he can't put a price tag on.
"Money is not the issue, it's all about life and I consider life is know," said Donald Smith, who is in need of a kidney transplant.

Today's skate-a-thon was organized by a family smith's honor.

Smith expects to have a kidney transplant in the near future.

"His kidneys are only working at four percent," said Faith Smith.
Donald Smith's wife Faith has agreed to give him one of her kidneys if she's a match.

"My wife possibly would be the one to donate the kidney and if not her, my youngest daughter," said Smith.

Smith recently underwent dialysis which is making him feel a little weak today. He didn't skate with everyone else, but he says this event means much more to him that.

"Just the idea that they would consider that for me to give me more life and a longer time here with them," said Smith.
Smith says when he thinks of people like ten year old Sarah Murnaghan, the Pennsylvania girl whose parents recently fought to get her a lung transplant in federal court, he thinks about the life she has to live.

"I would hope for a young lady that she would have the same opportunity, to see America, see the world, to see all the great things that are surround us," said Smith.

The same wish he has for Sarah is one he said he has for himself.

That is the chance to live longer.

"I'm here and I'm looking forward to more in the future," said Smith.

The Smith family plans on having more fundraisers in the future to continue raising more money for a new kidney.

His wife expects for the transplant to happen within the next six months. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
