HARRISONBURG, Va. -- John Kerns is the manager at Shade Equipment Company. He sells and installs snow removal devices. Since the store was closed the first few days of wintry weather this week, Thursday was a huge day for sales.
"I've probably sold five spreaders. Spreaders have really been the biggest thing here today, and a couple snow plow orders. And we've got some of those to install later this week," said John Kerns, the manager of Shade Equipment Company.
The company uses what's called “spreaders,” which dust the ground with salt and attach to the back of a truck.
It also sells plows. These are much larger pieces of equipment and usually bought for commercial use. A plow sells for about $5,000 and a spreader for $1,000.
Kern said business gets started in the fall and then he just waits for the snow. Last year, business slowed after January.
