Snow and Ice Keeping Stores on Alert

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Our most recent winter weather has kept local business owners busy since it started Thursday night.

Its accumulation on concrete and pavement has had store managers on edge across the Valley.

Shoppers crunched their way in and out of stores across the region as ice refreezes with these frigid temperatures.

John Garber, the manager of Red Front Supermarket, said keeping customers safe is a top priority in this kind of weather, but it doesn't take the sting out of the cold.

"At Red Front Supermarket, we have contracts with folks that come in and do plowing or salt as need be. There's some hand work and shoveling they have to do with our new sidewalks out front. I'm not a winter fan. Let's just put it that way. I always enjoy spring, summer, and fall and suffer through winter," said Garber.

Cart collectors at local grocery stores also have a particularly difficult job in cold weather.

Wrangling carts and getting them ready for shoppers is risky with icy ground and frosty handles, which is why Barber said he encourages his workers to be prepared before braving the bitter cold.

"They're definitely bundled up. There's a coat rack right back by customer service. The ones who are doing outdoor duty of any sort with their hats, gloves, coats right there. In nasty weather, they can bundle up before they get out in the cold weather," Garber explained. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion.
