Society to Display Document Signed by Lincoln

Posted: Mon 10:31 AM, Apr 09, 2012

A document signed by President Abraham Lincoln to end slavery will be displayed by the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond.

The original congressional copy of the 13th Amendment Resolution is one of only 13 copies signed by Lincoln, Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, 37 senators and 111 congressmen who supported the resolution, and only six of those copies still exist.

The permanent emancipation of slaves required a constitutional amendment which was ratified by the states in December 1865.

Lincoln signed the document two months before he was assassinated.

The resolution will be displayed in Virginia for the first time Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the Virginia Historical Society is free.
