Solar Tax Deductions

Local lawmakers are encouraging businesses to go green.

Mayor Richard Baugh says the Harrisonburg City Council will probably vote on an ordinance at Tuesday night's meeting.

He says it states that any businesses or company that has installed solar panels, is paying more taxes because of them, can be exempt from those payments.

Baugh says those businesses can file a request with the local government as soon as the statute is adopted.

He adds that the statute is particularly complex and detailed.

"I imagine that will be some of the discussion Tuesday night," says Baugh. "Just going back over it with the City Attorney, making sure we fully understand the legal implications of what we're doing."

He says this doesn't affect many residential areas at this time, but that's something that could change further down the road.
