Small businesses are having some sales after Black Friday.
They are participating in Small Business Saturday, a day focused on shopping local.
Some shoppers at a local store said they don't shop on Black Friday. But they wouldn't miss Small Business Saturday.
Anna Sease is getting ideas for Christmas gifts.
"It just was a nice day to walk around downtown and enjoy the local stores instead of the big commercial stores," Sease said.
For Sease local stores have more to offer than big box stores.
"You always see things that are a little more unique and it's just more pleasant," Sease said.
She's at Larkin Arts in Harrisonburg, taking advantage of small business saturday.
"It's nice to get some sales. It's an extra incentive to go out," she said.
This day is all about supporting local businesses.
Kris Pelletier is not a local.
However, he said it's important to invest in the community.
"They're people in their stores. They live in this town. You're literally taking your money and putting it right back where you live. It only makes sense to give back to the people that live around you," Pelletier said.
Larkin Arts owner Scott Whitten said people understand the impact of shopping local.
"When they purchase from a local business. They're not only benefiting themselves and the business owner, it benefits our community and for that reason this event will continue to grow."
He said he thinks the event will continue to grow.
"We have had pretty steady sales all day and we have had people who have dropped by who haven't been here yet," Whitten said.
This is Pelletier's first time at Larkin Arts.
He said he would rather shop Small Business Saturday than Black Friday.
"I don't need to be told when to shop. I have the need. I'll go when I need to," Pelletier said.
For Pelletier shopping local is worth his time.
But he said standing in line for hours to shop for a TV is not worth it.
"The deal isn't worth that kinda effort," Pelletier said.
Sease who came to Harrisonburg from New York to spend the holidays said all her effort on Black Friday was on being with family.
"[I] Stayed home with family and try to avoid the crowds and just focus on more the thanksgiving spirit than the spending spirit." she said.
Larkin Arts just opened a few months ago.
This is the first time the store has participated in Small Business Saturday. But the owner said it probably won't be the last.
