MASSANUTTEN, Va. (WHSV) -- A lot of people have traditions they stick to on Christmas.

We met a family at Massanutten Resort who has been skiing on Christmas for decades. They joined hundreds at the packed resort, which had plenty of activities to keep everyone in the family entertained.

Today was especially meaningful to one grandfather and granddaughter. Nicole Franklin has been going to Massanutten Resort with her cousins for as long as she can remember.

"My grandparents have had a timeshare here for a really long time, and all the kids have learned how to ski with them," Franklin said. "Some of them can snowboard. I'm not one of them."

John Hong, Franklin's grandfather, said the family looks forward to this every year.

"It's really great having all the kids up here, especially [for] my wife; it's even more special for her," said Hong, adding that this year, they have quite the crowd, as the family keeps growing. "We're spending the week up here with the grandkids, the great-grandkids, so we have a few people up here."

Hong has taught all his grandchildren to ski at Massanutten Resort, saying it is the perfect place for the family to spend Christmas.

"It's like a tradition. All of us have to learn. It's like part of the family initiation," said Franklin.

"It's really good to have all the kids here together and have them enjoy the entertainment and stuff around here," said Hong.

Franklin and her four cousins hit the slopes Christmas Day, while their proud grandfather took pictures. This week together is something the whole family treasures.

"It's great for your family to get together, especially around Christmas time. It gives you something else to do besides open presents. You really get to spend time together, and it's a nice little tradition," said Franklin.

Park managers said this year was a great year for the winter activities. The weather has cooperated, and a lot of families are taking advantage of the resort during the holiday week.
