Stephen Hott: WHSV Student Athlete of the Week February 27

EAST HARDY, W. Va. (WHSV) -- Stephen Hott from East Hardy High School has many goals in life.

On Friday nights, the goal of most young football players is to catch that game winning touchdown or to lead their team to a championship, but for Stephen, he just wants to step onto the field.

"I knew by my senior year that I wanted to not just on the side lines cheering on my friends and teammates but to be able to be on the field and helping them to get to that goal of winning games," said Stephen.

"I don't really know that we ever really saw him developing into a player. What he did was, he worked his way into it," said Chad Williams, Stephen's football coach.

That hard work eventually got him on the field, but his coaches weren't the only ones who saw his work ethic.

"A lot of times when you go out there, you go as hard as you can. It helps motivate your friends. If they see that you're putting into the team, they're also going to want to put into the team, so I try to lead by example," said Stephen.

Stephen isn't all about football though as his 4.25 GPA shows that he also puts plenty of attention towards his school work.

"You have to have a balance of both is how you become a better person because sports can provide you with something that academics can't and academics can provide you with something that you can't always get in sports," said Stephen.

"He's driven. He knows exactly what he wants to do and what his goals are and he's willing to put forward the effort to achieve those goals," said David Rudy, one of Stephen's teachers.

Stephen's goal for the next phase in his life is to attend a military academy.

"If you don't have set goals that you want to accomplish you're not going to accomplish it so when I was younger I decided that I wanted to go into the military, I wanted to fly so I saw the military academies as my route to do that," said Stephen. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion.
