HARRISONBURG -- A new stomach bug is spreading from state to state.

So far no cases have been reported in Virginia, but here's a look at the states where people have reported getting sick. They include Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, Wisconsin, Georgia and Connecticut.

Symptoms include diarrhea, cramping and in severe cases a bloody stool. Here's how you can protect yourself from getting it.

"Drinking tested water, home water from a well that has been tested or from a water supply that has been adequately treated and their own testing to make sure that parasites and other little critters don't get into the water," said Dr. Stephen Phillips, a Medical Director with RMH.

He says that Cyclospora is a parasite that can get into your system from doing things as simple as drinking water.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is still investigating the cause of the outbreak.
