STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) -- Many items around the house can potentially be deadly to children.

One of the more obvious items is medication.

Kids can be attracted to pills because they can look or taste like candy.

Even toothpaste poses a danger as many types contain sodium fluoride; however, if enough is swallowed, it mixes with stomach juices to create a poison.

"It's either going to be difficult, dangerous or deadly. And I've seen children in my career where any of those have happened," said Dr. Robert Fern with Valley Pediatrics Group.

According to a new report from Safe Kids Worldwide, every eight minutes a child goes to the emergency room for medicine poisoning.

In most of those visits, the kids got into medicine that belonged to their parents or grandparents.

"Parents have a tendency to think it's not happening to us. And then they maybe don't check on their own children," said Bernice Newman Dandridge, who is both a mother and a grandmother.

There are some simple steps you can take with your medicines to make sure your kids don't become the next victim.

"Make it a little inconvenient on yourself to get to your medicines. It doesn't have to be extravagant. It doesn't have to be in a safe and protected behind armor, but the higher the better, in a cabinet the better," said Fern.

The cost of the consequences well worth the inconvenience.

"You always have to air on the side of 'it might happen,' and take the precautions beforehand. My parents, when I grew up, always had a little saying about locking the barn door after the horse went out, that's a little late," said Dandridge.
