A group of students from Blue Ridge Community College is working to bring change to third world countries.

The group Enactus just returned from a trip to Haiti to bring lights to some villages.

Member Jessica Romero said many Haitians live without electricity. That's why the group decided to purchase 600 D-lights.

These lights are charged with solar energy and they can shine at night, as bright as an LED light.

According to Romero, the group's mission, is to provide sustainability for these communities.

She said with the help of community members, they chose the seven most needy women in the village to sell the lights.

The women started with one box of lights, which contains 12 lights, and then they would be able to get more, if they have sold the first ones.

For Romero, is important to bring change to people less fortunate.

"Us as Americans, we have a lot of resources, we have a government that supports us. We have very educated people. It's our call. It's what we should do. If you have the opportunity to go to a third world country and help someone who needs it. It's what you should do," Romero said.

During the trip, the students also gave some of the villagers cooking briquettes, instead of the charcoal they currently use.

She said charcoal is expensive and harmful for the body.

The group will go back for another trip in June. This time, they want to help the villagers get a truck. She said some of them work at a general store and they need a truck to transport their goods.
