MCGAHEYSVILLE, Va. (WHSV) -- Students at McGaheysville Elementary School held a ceremony Monday morning to pay tribute to veterans.
School leaders said the goal of the annual event is to honor and thank the servicemen and women for all that they've done.
Students read notes to the veterans and also sang patriotic songs.
About 300 students offered thanks to the veterans who attended.
The veterans there served in several different wars from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan.
The veterans also spoke to the students with many of them thanking the children for the events and talking about the importance of the day.
"It's nice to see young children appreciating veterans and learning what service to the country is all about," said Mark Decot, a veteran.
"The lessons are that there's a human capital to defending our way of life. The men and women that stood in front of them today were that testament," said Richard Showalter, another veteran.
There were other musical tributes as well.
One man sang" God Bless The U.S.A." and one of the veterans performed the songs for the branches of the military on the harmonica.
