State Leaders Trying to Find New Use for Sugar Grove

PENDLETON COUNTY, W.Va. (WHSV)-- Sugar Grove Naval Base is set to close next year. The base is about an hour's drive from downtown Harrisonburg.

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin and W. Va. Governor Earl Ray Tomblin visited the base on Aug. 26. They discussed the potential for reuse of the facility in Pendleton County. The base could transition into either another government agency, state agency, or a nonprofit or private agency. That's what leaders are trying to decide at this point.

A big concern is keeping jobs in the county, and possibly bringing more work to the area.

"Our Department of Corrections is looking for a facility. Something like this where we could do some training for our inmates that soon will be going before the parole board to give them some skills that they could work with to go back to their communities and be productive citizens," said Gov. Tomblin.

The U.S. General Services Administration will make a decision next spring on the future use of the facility.
