SHENANDOAH VALLEY, Va –- When the Drug Enforcement Administration arrived in the Valley they found local businesses acting in accordance with the law. The national investigation, called Operation Log Jam, had DEA agents working with the local drug task forces.
The goal was to check half a dozen businesses throughout the Valley suspected of dealing bath salts and spice.
“Each one of these stores was in compliance with the code of Virginia, that was just amended, that now covers bath salts and the other synthetic drugs,” said Sgt. Brian Edwards with the Waynesboro Police Department.
No arrests were made in the Valley during Operation Log Jam and our local law enforcement sees that as a positive step toward the end of the problem.
“That is reassuring because of the local community outpouring, not just from law enforcement agencies and prosecuting attorneys, but from the public, from churches, wanting a crackdown because bath salts have really ravaged this area.”
Operation Log Jam resulted in the arrest of more than 90 people across the country. Millions of dollars in bath salts and synthetic marijuana are now off the streets.
Here is a map of the locations of Operation Log Jam:

“I think it gets the word out of knowledge about bath salts area and how dangerous and destructive it is,” said Amber Ham, program manager at the Office on Youth. “Hopefully the manufacturers and the people that are selling it, hopefully they'll look, 'Ok, there is something happening and there's consequences.'”
Sgt. Edwards said Operation Log Jam helped the public to understand the synthetic drug problem.
“When they come in, it shows a lot of gravity,” said Sgt. Edwards.
The federal investigation is closed, but that does not mean the end of the fight against synthetic drugs in the Valley.
Those stores that passed the compliance test will continue to be checked. The DEA would not release the names of Valley stores that were investigated, but they only searched at places that have had numerous complaints against them.
