WAYNESBORO, Va.--- A National Retail Federation survey suggests Black Friday remains the most popular shopping day of the year despite stores opening on Thanksgiving day.

According to a 2012 NRF survey, 88 million people shopped at the stores and online on Black Friday in 2012. However, on Thanksgiving day 35 million started the shopping early.

Pam Johnson compared camera prices on Target on Sunday. She said she pays close attention to bargains, especially as Black Friday approaches.

"I like to look for all the deals out there for Christmas," said Johnson.

She said 12 a.m. on Black Friday is the earliest she will start shopping.

"On thanksgiving, I consider that time to be with my family and all, so I don't think about going shopping until actually on Black Friday," said Johnson.

In 2012, stores, such as Target, opened before 12 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

Tracey Hodge who is the senior team lead the Target in Waynesboro said it is necessary to open early in order to remain competitive.

"If we didn't open at the same time, then our guests will shop elsewhere and we don't want to lose our guests. We want them to shop here and get the deals that we are offering," said Hodge.

The NRF states only 20 percent of people were at the stores before 12 a.m. last year. The number of shoppers increased as Black Friday went on. According to Hodge, she still noticed a large crowd at Target on Thursday.

"It was like any normal Black Friday. It was just on Thursday. It was the same amount of rush, the same amount of people coming through our doors that we experience in the past on Fridays," said Hodge.

Other stores like Kmart expect the rush of customers earlier this year because it will open at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving day.

"For myself, it wouldn't work out but for other people that may be that is the only time they get to go," said Johnson.

A spokesman from Kmart sent WHSV a statement that states its decision is based on feedback from some of its customers. Target has not released the time it will open yet. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
