LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Military Institute has evacuated several buildings following the discovery of a suspicious item on the Lexington campus.

The school says in a news release that the item was found Wednesday morning near the entrance to Preston Library.

The library and portions of Nichols Engineering Building and Mallory Hall were evacuated. VMI spokesman Stewart MacInnis says cadets were alerted by e-mail, text messages and announcements over a public address system in the barracks, following a protocol that was refined after the 2007 Virginia Tech shootings.

MacInnis says campus police and local police and fire crews are on the scene and are waiting for state police to arrive.

The school says personnel should avoid the Parade Ground and an area between the Admissions Office and Jackson Memorial Hall.
