BRIDGEWATER -- Virginia's General Assembly is considering changing state laws regarding tanning salons. If the proposal becomes law, it wouldn't let teenagers under the age of 15 use tanning beds.
In addition, it would require 15 to 17 year-old teenagers to have written consent from their parents. The law passed the state senate, and is being considered in the house.
At Simmons Cut & Tan, Patricia Simmons, the owner, believes the proposal wouldn't hurt business too much, as they don't see too many customers under the age of 15. She said most of the regular customers are in their 20s, but they do get business from high school students during prom and dance season.
Simmons thinks if parents let their kids tan, but do it responsibility, they shouldn't run into health problems. "You're only going to get so dark. It's just like anything else. You can abuse it just like anything else, basically in moderation. I personally have been using tanning beds myself since I was 16, and as you can see I'm not young, but I have never had any issues with it," said Simmons.
Simmons said the gym and tanning salon does have other methods of tanning, including spray tanning, and using a bed without burning rays.
